20th February 2007 Kakamega, west to the Ugandan Border
This morning we headed off towards the Ugandan border passing through the town of Kakamega on the way. A stop on the river bridge in Munias produced the desired Rock Pratincoles along with Grey-rumped Swallow and Red-chested Sunbird. We then spent the best part of the morning at Mungatsi working agriculture fields near the border. Due to the heat, the birding was hard going but we persevered and managed catch up with Bar-tailed Firefinch, Compact Weaver, Hartlaub's Widowbird, Yellow-throated Leaflove, Senegal Coucal and Veillot's Black Weaver.
After lunch back at Rondo Retreat, we spent several hours in the late afternoon walking trails in the nearby forest. Even with the use of a local guide, the birds were few and far between and the only birds of note we could muster were White-tailed Ant Thrush and Square-tailed Drongo. Our attempts to tape out White-spotted Flufftail were in vain and equally disappointing was our failure to see Blue-headed Bee-eater. Back in the grounds of the retreat final birds of the day were Pale-throated Illadopsis and Red-tailed Bristletail.
